About Us

Welcome to The Heritage Youth Leadership Development

Our non-profit aims to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in Washington State by establishing after-school leadership programs specifically designed for at-risk students. Data from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) reveals significant disparities in suspension and expulsion rates across Washington schools. In particular, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color, along with students with disabilities, experience disproportionately high rates of disciplinary actions, which are linked to increased involvement in the juvenile justice system.

Our Mission

HYLD empowers youth leaders including underserved youth, as well as all young people who benefit from culturally responsive support, to lead with confidence, purpose, and community pride. We challenge the school-to-prison pipeline by offering leadership development, mentorship, and opportunities that strengthen identity, build skills, and expand pathways to success.

Vision

A Washington State where every young person, regardless of race, background, or zip code, has the tools, support, and opportunities to succeed as a leader in their community.

Why It Matters

The rates of exclusionary discipline in Washington State reveal alarming patterns. In the 2022-2023 school year, suspension and expulsion rates remained disproportionately high among marginalized groups. The cumulative effect of repeated suspensions often leads to student disengagement from school, which limits academic success and increases the risk of entering the juvenile justice system.

We provide culturally grounded leadership development, mentorship, and community-based programs that help young people build confidence, strengthen communication, and thrive in school and beyond.

Our Appoach

Our nonprofit aims to establish a network of afterschool leadership programs in schools throughout Washington State to prevent the negative consequences of exclusionary discipline. These programs will include the following components:

  • Culturally responsive programming
  • Trauma-informed facilitation
  • Restorative practices
  • Youth Voice at the Center
  • Strong collaborations with schools and families

Outcomes & Key Takeaways

Impact and Achievements

Our proposed after-school leadership development programs aim to reduce exclusionary discipline rates by addressing behavioral challenges and enhancing student engagement. Through mentorship, skill-building, and community-focused projects, students will develop a stronger sense of purpose and identity, which can help
decrease the likelihood of involvement with the juvenile justice system.

A Shared Vision for the Future

This afterschool initiative harnesses the power of leadership development to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. By equipping students with essential skills, mentorship, and opportunities for community involvement, we aim to create a more equitable educational experience and ensure that all students receive the support they need to thrive and succeed.
